CCSD Message: Absences on Friday, Nov. 5 CCSD_Identity_horizontal_CMYK

On behalf of the Superintendent, we recognize and celebrate the historic World Series win by the Atlanta Braves, a valued CCSD Partner.  We love our hometown team and are so proud of their accomplishments this season.  While we are not cancelling school for Friday’s victory parade and celebration, any student absences for students who attend that event will be counted as “unexcused but without academic penalty.”  While our policies do not permit excused absences for such occasions, the designation of “unexcused but without academic penalty” provides students the important opportunity to make up all missed work and tests next week.  For those families who choose to attend Friday’s celebratory parade that will travel through Fulton and Cobb Counties, we hope you have a safe and memorable experience and we’ll see you back in class on Monday!

SHS Wrestling History

Two of the most storied careers in Cherokee County Wrestling History happened to be at the exact same time. The Wilkie twins, Justin and Wyatt, were apart of an elite era of Sequoyah Wrestling history, which included their two older brothers as well. This period included several individual region and team region titles as well as a few individual State Championships and a pair of team State Championships.

Wyatt WilkieWyatt Wilkie is a 1999 graduate of Sequoyah High School where his prowess in wrestling set him apart as one of the best wrestlers in Cherokee County history. Wilkie was the first wrestler in county history to win a state championship as a freshman. He also led the 1996 Sequoyah High School wrestling team to the first team state championship in county history. After winning two individual GHSA state titles, Wilkie accepted a scholarship to Cumberland College where he became the first county wrestler to become a two college All-American. Wilkie returned to Cherokee County as an assistant coach at Sequoyah before becoming the first head wrestling coach at Creekview High School.

Justin WilkieJustin Wilkie is a 1999 graduate of Sequoyah High School. Like his twin brother, Justin is apart of Cherokee County Wrestling history as a 4X GHSA State Placer, the first pair to do so. Justin capped off his high school career with a state championship in 1999, that also helped Sequoyah win their 2nd team title, and a county wrestler of the year award. After completing his storied high school career, Justin joined the Army and become a doctor.

All peer tutors earn community services hours for their time spent tutoring.  If you have students who would like to be a tutor, please encourage them to swing by the Student Center during their lunch period and speak to the Student Supervisor on duty.
