CCSD Celebrates Outstanding ESOL Teacher, EL Student

CCSD Exemplary EL Student 2022

 

The Cherokee County School District is celebrating its Exemplary English for Speakers of Other Languages Teacher of the Year and Exemplary English Learner Student of the Year!

The 2022 honorees are teacher Denise Terrezza of Freedom Middle School and Sequoyah High School senior Daniel Chirinos Gil.  The Georgia Department of Education annually recognizes one outstanding ESOL teacher and EL student from each school district.  

Daniel, who speaks Spanish as his first language, is an outstanding student, athlete and leader.  A varsity soccer player, Daniel serves on the school’s transition team to help incoming freshman have the best first year possible at Sequoyah.

“Our English Learners face additional obstacles on their path to graduating future ready, and Daniel has overcome these challenge through his dedication to success,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower.  “We’re proud of him for earning this honor and thankful for the care he shows by helping younger students.”  

Ms. Terrezza has excelled in her first year as an ESOL teacher at Freedom MS.  Not only does she shine in her classroom work, Ms. Terrezza has taken on volunteer roles including with the school’s mentoring program for students who need additional support.

“Our English Learners would not be as successful as they are without the devotion of excellent teachers like Ms. Terrezza,“ Dr. Hightower said.  “She exemplifies the ideal of a teacher who uses best practices for academic instruction in the classroom, and couples that with the care and concern for her students she demonstrates daily.  Congratulations and thank you for your service!”
