A Cherokee High School Class of 2022 graduate has won the annual Maritza Mott Scholarship!
Adriana Chavez-Mejia earned the $1,000 memorial scholarship, which is open to one graduating senior and awarded based on an application, essay questions and references.
The first in her family to attend college, Adriana plans to study digital marketing at the University of North Georgia to pursue a career as a marketing manager. Adriana served as manager for the school’s boys’ lacrosse team, worked at a local daycare and has volunteered at her church’s food pantry.
“Making bags full of simple foods that you would think most people didn’t have to struggle to buy changed my life,” she said of volunteering. “What really made me see how hard it was for other people just to live is when we dropped off the bags at these people’s homes and how happy they were that they were able to either feed their children for the month or just ease their growling stomachs. This has affected me most personally by allowing me to see how much I take for granted and how much something so little like bread can mean to someone.”
