Cherokee County School District student athletes have been honored by Positive Athlete Georgia with 10 regional awards, as well as top honors for a Woodstock High School coach and for Creekview High School!
The 2023 Positive Athlete Georgia Awards are presented by the Positive Athlete Georgia organization, which promotes the benefits of positivity to young athletes around the world. More than 3,000 high school students are nominated annually as the “most positive” athlete among their peers by coaches, principals, athletic directors, teachers and parents. Awards are presented for each sport at the regional level, with region winners advancing to state-level competition to be held later this spring.
In addition to demonstrating excellence in their sport, Positive Athletes must show these characteristics: optimistic attitude, teammate encouragement, servant leadership, heart for others, ability to admit imperfections, giving 100 percent all the time, and realizing the team as more important than the individual.
CCSD’s 2023 Positive Athlete Georgia Regional Award student winners are:
CHEROKEE HS
Laney Cline - tennis
Weston Olds - soccer
CREEKVIEW HS
Makena Dubois – golf
Pierson Moss - tennis
ETOWAH HS
Jack Strickland - football
RIVER RIDGE HS
Kathryn Hutchinson – flag football
Catherine McNutt - lacrosse
SEQUOYAH HS

Jake Labasi – cross-country
WOODSTOCK HS

Two outstanding coaches are named for each region each year – one for boys sports, and one for girls – and this year’s Most Positive Boys Coach for the Northwest Atlanta Region is Wakely Louis of Woodstock High School, head coach for cross-country and track and field.
The organization also names a Most Positive School for each region, and Creekview High School won the honor for Northwest Atlanta! Principal Michael Santoro leads Creekview, and the athletic director assistant principal is Chris Bennett.
“We’re so proud of these honors, as they exemplify the most important part of our athletic programs,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “Performance in athletic competitions is important, but even more important is demonstrating positive character on and off the field. The fact that students from all of our schools as well as one of our coaches and one of our schools as a whole have earned top regional honors speaks volumes about our community. Congratulations to these honorees and their families and thank you to all of our coaches, athletic directors and principals for your role in this success!”
