Our Principals are dedicated leaders, and we’ll be introducing you this month to our school district’s new Principals. Please help us celebrate Sandi Harrison, who this school year will lead Liberty Elementary School!
Liberty Elementary School’s outstanding reputation for high quality teaching and community engagement has met its match in new Principal Sandi Harrison.
A 17-year educator, Principal Harrison also is known for her instructional excellence and for involving community partners in supporting student learning.
“Through numerous conversations with various stakeholders, it is evident Liberty is truly a school family. From the students, to the staff, to the parents and the community, all stakeholders work together to ensure the success of our students in this ever-evolving society,” said Principal Harrison, who most recently served as an assistant principal at Hasty ES Fine Arts Academy for the past three years. “I look forward to developing strong relationships with all stakeholders in order to effectively serve this amazing cadre of learners.”
During her time at Hasty ES, Principal Harrison fostered strong community partnerships, such as with the Rotary Club of Canton, and helped write grants that won more than $30,000 for school programs. One of the highlights of the Rotary partnership is a journal writing program with club members serving as mentors.
Principal Harrison began her education career as a classroom teacher, including at Hasty ES Fine Arts Academy and Knox ES STEM Academy, and earned both Golden Apple and Teacher of the Year honors. She also has served as a virtual learning specialist for the Georgia Department of Education and as an instructional lead strategist at R.M. Moore and Ball Ground ES STEM Academies.
She has earned bachelor’s, master’s and two specialist degrees in education and currently is pursuing her doctorate degree in educational leadership. Principal Harrison’s husband, David, is a teacher at River Ridge HS, and their son is a third-grader. In addition to her educational accolades, Principal Harrison this summer was named one of the “Top 10 in 10” young leaders in the community by the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce.
“I can’t wait for our hallways to be filled with smiling faces and our classrooms to come to life with energy and excitement for learning,” Principal Harrison said. “I believe education is not simply a career path, but a quest to make an impact. This new role provides me with further opportunities to serve this community that I love, and I look forward to the adventure that awaits!”
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said the retirement of Principal Doug Knott left big shoes to fill. “Sandi is just the right fit for Liberty, as she brings great experience and energy to the role as well as a big heart for kids,” he said. “We know she will build upon the school’s status as a National School of Character to find new opportunities for growth and engagement, and we look forward to seeing all she will accomplish.”
How can parents be more involved? “Education is a collaborative effort, and it is evident the parents of Liberty Elementary should be applauded for their continuous efforts to partner with the school to create optimal learning opportunities and a positive learning environment for all students,” Principal Harrison said. “Open communication is key, and I desire for all stakeholders to feel valued for the tremendous role they play in ensuring student success and overall well-being. At Liberty we have an amazing PTA which helps organize efforts to serve our students, staff and families. Additionally, we are continuously seeking volunteers to support our staff in creating meaningful learning experiences for our students. “We are thrilled to welcome our families to numerous schoolwide events throughout the year, and we anticipate being able to further strengthen the relationships of our school community as we seek to continuously enhance our well-rounded educational experiences for our Liberty students and their families,” she added. “Through the use of our social media platforms and weekly ParentSquare newsletters, we will keep our families informed of the exciting occasions planned to bring our school community together. Educational research shows a strong correlation between strong parent involvement and academic success, and I look forward to having these rewarding relationships with our Liberty community!”
