Meet the New Principal: Kim Hagood of Carmel ES!

Posted On: Thursday, August 13, 2020

Our Principals are dedicated leaders, and we’ll be introducing you over the coming days to Principals who are new to the role or who are serving at new schools this year.  Please help us celebrate Carmel Elementary School’s new leader: Kim Hagood!

Carmel Elementary School has welcomed home a familiar face to serve as its Principal.

Kim Hagood worked as an assistant principal at Carmel on her path to become a Principal, and returns there after leading Free Home Elementary School for the past three years.

“It’s been exciting to see our Carmel Colts!” she said.  “Having been away from students since March, I was ready to see those precious faces!”

A veteran educator with more than 30 years of experience, Principal Hagood started her career in Virginia, where she taught for 12 years.  She joined CCSD as a teacher at Bascomb Elementary and Hasty Elementary before starting her administrative work as an assistant principal at Carmel and Avery Elementary School.  She earned her bachelor’s degree in education, following by a master’s in curriculum and instruction from the University of Virginia and a specialist degree with a leadership certificate from Virginia Tech.

“Principal Hagood excels at inspiring her staff and encouraging them to further greatness – she is expert at noticing strengths and coaching new leaders,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said.  “She also has a big heart and works hard to ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed and that every parent has the opportunity to be a partner in their child’s education.”

Principal Hagood has two grown children: her daughter is following in her footsteps as an elementary school teacher, and her son is an attorney.

How can parents be more involved? “Parent involvement is vital to our school!  It will look differently this year, but we hope that every parent will join together with our teachers to make this a wonderful year.  We encourage our parents to join PTA and participate in our parent university programs.  We want our Digital Learners to stay connected with our school.  Parents can help by supporting instruction at home and keeping the lines of communication open with the teachers.”
