More Cherokee County School District Class of 2018 students took the ACT exam than any previous class, while maintaining impressive averages and exceeding National and State averages!
Results released today show the Class of 2018 posted an excellent overall score of 23, while a record number took the challenging college entrance and placement examination: 1,809 students -- an 11-percent increase from the previous year. The score ranks CCSD third among metro Atlanta counties and seventh in Georgia – out of 180 school districts!
“We’re focused on ensuring students are opportunity ready, and outstanding scores on exams like the ACT illustrate how we answer that bell,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “These strong results show that our students rise to the challenges posed by their outstanding teachers in preparation for college and careers. We’re extremely proud of this accomplishment by our students and all who support them, and we’re committed to further improving student readiness for future success.”
The State and National average scores for the Class of 2018 came in at 21.4 and 20.8. Students earn a score on a scale of 1 to 36. The ACT is taken in lieu of or along with the SAT, and Class of 2018 SAT scores are scheduled for release later this month.
The new results show how closely students from all six of CCSD’s high schools perform – a sign of consistent instructional excellence, with total average scores within less than a one-point spread: Cherokee HS, 22.9; Creekview HS, 22.7; Etowah HS, 23.2; River Ridge HS, 22.6; Sequoyah HS, 23.1; and Woodstock HS, earning the highest composite at 23.4. All six high schools ranked in the top 15 percent of schools statewide.
The ACT results report also reflects college-readiness by subject tested, with CCSD students significantly exceeding State averages: English, 80% (Georgia 65%; U.S. 60%); Social Science, 61% (49%; 46%); Algebra, 53% (40%; 40%); Biology, 50% (38%; 36%).
According to State data collected from Georgia public colleges and universities, when CCSD students move on to college, they’re more prepared than their classmates, as 95 percent don’t need a single remedial class.
Principals and their leadership and data-management teams now will dig into the newly released ACT results to improve instruction, and school counselors will use the data to inform recommendations for which entrance exams are the best match for a student’s admission and scholarship success. The ACT will be administered in CCSD five more times this school year; the testing calendar is posted online here.
