Creekview Aeronautics qualified two teams to compete at The American Rocketry Challenge (TARC) National finals this past weekend.  In a field of 100 teams, Team 3, captained by Johnny Schaly, with team members Cole Day, Max McMahan, Christian Richards, Karlee Tomlin, Ethan Dooley, A’stori Hart, Sean Yates, Mason Duckworth, and Nigel Gallagher, finished 6th overall!  Their finish is Creekview’s 5th overall top 10 finish, the 4th top 10 finish since 2018, and qualifies the team to participate in the NASA Student Launch in 2022-2023.

For the competition, teams are tasked with building a rocket to carry two eggs oriented horizontally in the rocket to an altitude of 835 feet in a flight time of 41-43 seconds.  Rockets must meet certain length and weight requirements and successfully return the eggs to the ground unbroken.  Roughly 700 teams nationwide submit scores with the top 1100 invited to the national fly-off just west of Washington, D. C.

Creekview’s Team 3 managed to advance through difficult conditions in the first round where the goal altitude was 810 feet, and, in spite of falling just short of that goal, they were sitting in 15th place heading into the final round of 42.  The target altitude for the 2nd launch was 860 feet, and Team 3’s successful execution in this round moved them into a 6th place finish!

This finish qualifies Team 3 to participate in the NASA Student Launch program which tasks students to design and build a large, high-powered rocket to carry scientific and/or engineering payloads.  Creekview recently participated in the NASA SL, receiving 3rd place in the “Closest to Target Altitude Award” in 2020.

Team 1 members who also attended this year’s competition are:  Michael Peña (captain), Noah Clary, Owen Clary, Isabella Giuliano, Sydney Sharrock, Callista Herdt, Rand Johnson, Emerson Shi, Eason Barrineau, and Elain Wallace.
