Two Cherokee County School District graduating seniors have earned 2021 National Merit Scholarships!
Nathan Davis of Creekview HS and Jeremy Jeong of Sequoyah HS are among the top 2,500 seniors in the U.S. to earn the prestigious $2,500 scholarship awarded by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
“Congratulations to Nathan and Jeremy on this extraordinary accomplishment,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “This honor represents a lifetime of dedication to learning, and the investment of their families, teachers and community in providing them the best education possible. We look forward to all they will accomplish in their bright futures.”
Nathan, who plans to study medicine, and Jeremy, who plans to study materials science, and their fellow Merit Scholar designees were selected from more than 15,000 outstanding Finalists who made it through the initial rigorous selection process for the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Merit Scholars are selected based on their accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The selection committee is made up of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who reviewed records submitted by Finalists and their high schools including difficulty of courses and grades earned, college-entrance exam scores, contributions and leadership in school and community activities, an essay written by the Finalist and a recommendation written by a high school official.
They and CCSD’s other three Finalists also remain in the running for college-sponsored National Merit scholarships, which are announced in June and July.
