A Cherokee County School District student has earned first place in a statewide career skills competition.

Etowah High School senior Avery DiGirolamo won the top prize in the mental health education in action competitive event at the Georgia HOSA Future Health Professionals fall leadership conference.

Avery competed against other healthcare science students from across the state at the conference, which offered five competitive events.  The mental health education in action competitive event won by Avery is new this school year.  She is a student in the Etowah HS Career Pathway healthcare science program focused on therapeutic services, sports medicine and exercise physiology led by teacher Megan King.

“Congratulations to Avery for representing her school and our school district with excellence,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said.  “This honor illustrates how well our Career Pathway students are being prepared for future readiness.  We’re growing our Career Pathway programs each year across our district thanks to our excellent instructors, including Ms. King, who I know is incredibly proud of Avery’s success.”

CCSD now offers 38 Career Pathway high school programs districtwide, which provide students with a wide selection of job exploration and preparation electives.  New this school year, CCSD began a weekly feature on its website and social media called CCSD Pathway Profiles.  The programs featured so far are posted online at https://www.cherokeek12.net/Content2/careers. 

The Cherokee County School Board and Dr. Hightower will recognize Avery at the December School Board meeting.
