Cherokee County School District high school students excelled at the statewide literary championships!

The students earned individual and team honors at the Georgia High Schools Association event, which includes writing, public speaking, acting and singing competitions, and Cherokee High School’s team was named the 7A State Champion.

“Congratulations to all of our award-winning students and their teacher coaches for an excellence performance at the state level,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said.  “This competition tests skills that not only celebrate the fine arts, but also public speaking and writing skills that are critical across future career paths.  Kudos on a job well done!”    

Cherokee High School’s team, coached by theatre program director Dr. Jodi Burn, is made up of Sarah Bell, Lauren Heaney, Selika Hulbert, Olivia Langston, Emmanuel Mwangi, Brittany Pack, Andrew Solano and Anna Scott Wieler.

Sophomore Emmanuel Mwangi was named 7A State Champion for Oral Interpretation – Humorous.  Three students were named the 7A State runner-up in their competition categories: Olivia Langston for Essay – Personal, Brittany Pack for Oral Interpretation – Dramatic and Anna Scott Wieler for Essay – Rhetorical.  Sarah Bell, Lauren Heaney and Selika Hulbert earned third place in the Trio competition.

Sequoyah High School’s team, coached by choral director Josh Markham, was named the 6A State Runner Up.  Team members are Ashlyn Bolduc, Claire Clemons, Suzanne Cook, Cameron Diamond, Alex Gilliam, Maggie Haggerty, Emma Jira, Kyle Kennedy, Wesley Lanter, Taryn Mareau, Stephanie Mater and Jephrey Oliver.

Senior Wesley Lanter was named 6A State Champion for Extemporaneous Speaking – International, and junior Stephanie Mater was named 6A State Champion for Essay – Rhetorical.  Ashlyn Bolduc, Suzanne Cook and Taryn Mareau earned 6A State runner-up for Trio, and Cameron Diamond, Kyle Kennedy, Wesley Lanter and Jephrey Oliver placed third in state for Quartet. 

Creekview High School’s team, coached by choral director Scott Martin, earned several individual top honors.  Madison Lawson was named 6A State runner-up in Oral Interpretation – Dramatic, and Katharyn McConnell earned third place in Essay – Personal. 

Etowah High School’s team, coached by choral director William Hall, earned 7A State runner-up Quartet honors for the performance by Sam Carter, Nicholas Miller, Jonathan Palmer and Brady Winters.

The students and coaches will be recognized by the Cherokee County School Board and Dr. Hightower at the School Board's meeting this month.
