Three Cherokee County School District Class of 2021 graduates have earned National Merit special scholarships!
Cherokee High School graduate Dylan Iovino, who plans to pursue a degree in chemical engineering, has won a National Merit university scholarship from the University of Alabama. Etowah High School graduate Benjamin Willett, who plans to pursue a career in finance, has won a National Merit university scholarship from the University of Georgia. River Ridge High School graduate Audrey Norton has won a National Merit corporate scholarship from Crum & Forster and plans to attend the University of North Carolina.
“We’re incredibly proud of these outstanding graduates on earning such competitive scholarships,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “Congratulations to you, your families and your teachers. We wish you all the best as you begin the next chapter of your education and future success!”
National Merit university and corporate scholarship winners are selected by awarding groups through review of academic records and college-entrance exam scores; leadership and service in their school and community; and personal essays and letters of recommendation.
Dylan served as the school’s academic bowl team captain and for three years in the Band of Warriors Marching Band and Honor Band, as well as in National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. He achieved the Silver Award on the National Spanish Exam, the University of Georgia Certificate of Merit, Superintendent’s Key Scholar Award and academic letter.
Ben earned membership in National Honor Society, as well as Superintendent’s Key Scholar, Lamp of Knowledge, and academic letter honors. A multiple State qualifier in swimming, Ben also was a member of Etowah’s Eagle Connections group that focused on improving and enhancing school spirit.
Audrey participated in the River Ridge HS Marching Band for four years, and served her school and community through Beta Club, National Honors Society, Sprouting STEMs Club, Math Team, Earth Club and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. She earned the Superintendent’s Key Scholar Award, an academic letter and University of Georgia Certificate of Merit.
Only 15,000 of the Nation’s top graduating seniors are eligible for the 3,300 National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. universities and colleges. The scholarships range from $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study. A final round of university-sponsored National Merit Scholarships will be announced later this month.
