Seven Cherokee County School District students have been named to the State School Superintendent’s 2019-20 Student Advisory Council!

They are: Etowah HS ninth-grader Ila Prabhuram, who also was selected to serve last school year; E.T. Booth MS eighth-graders Madeline May and Anvita Rautray; Teasley MS eighth-grader Nick Whyte; Woodstock HS seniors Laney Broussard and Ella Elbeck; and Woodstock MS seventh-grader Marisol Borrero.

The 130 Council members were selected from more than 1,000 applications statewide based on their community service experience and their answers to essay questions about public education and how they think it could be improved.

“I’m so proud of these student leaders for stepping up to represent their schools and our School District at the state level,” CCSD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower.  “We know they will serve their community well, and I look forward to meeting with them all myself to hear their thoughts on how to improve our School District.”

Council members will meet with State Superintendent Woods throughout the school year to talk about issues such as how state policies affect their schools, and also will serve as the Superintendent’s student ambassadors and participate in service projects.

Superintendent Woods said he’s grateful for the student leaders who serve, noting they provide valuable insights that lead to direct changes in Georgia’s public school system.

The CCSD students will be recognized by the Cherokee County School Board and Superintendent of Schools at the School Board’s Oct. 17 meeting.
