I am very excited to become part of the Firebird family as the newly appointed Principal at Indian Knoll Elementary School for the 2018-19 school year. I am honored at the opportunity to work in a school with rich traditions, high academic standards, and in a thriving community. As a new member of the “Firebird” family, I look forward to collaborating with parents and community members to continue strong business relationships, academic excellence, and innovative practices. I have been dedicated to the field of education for 24 years.  During this time, my experiences include teaching kindergarten and first grade, working with students with special needs in a variety of settings, and being an administrator. I am fortunate to have worked as an administrator in five different elementary schools over the course of my career. My experiences have been in schools that are varied in size, area, and student demographics creating a broad level of administrative experience.

I hold a L6/T6 Georgia Educator’s’ Certificate in Educational Leadership (P-12), Early Childhood Education (P-5), Middle Grades (4-8) in five content areas, as well as Special Education General Curriculum (P-12) and in five content areas (P-8).  I have my Specialist Degree in school leadership from Lincoln Memorial University and have taken several doctoral classes as well.

My first priority is being a leader who focused on the needs of all stakeholders through open communication and visibility. To be an effective administrator it is important to be actively engaged in the building activities each day, know the children’s names, put smiles on their faces, and have a positive relationship with the community at large.  With each decision I make, I always consider student safety, what is best for children, and the educational value of that choice.  I evaluate if school initiatives will positively impact a student, and continually look out for students’ best interests. I am very approachable and have the ability to quickly build professional relationships. I pride myself on being “customer-service” focused and easily available to all stakeholders.

I am originally from Naperville, Illinois and went to college in Long Island, New York. I have lived in Georgia since 1994 and now consider myself a true Southerner.  I am newly married and have two children; Alexa (20) and Jake (22). Alexa is a sophomore at Georgia State University majoring in business with a biology minor, and Jake serves in the US Air Force as an Air Traffic Controller in Washington State.

I look forward to a wonderful year!

Assistant Principal, Ashley Watson Ashley Kennerly - Assistant Principal  EMAIL

My name is Ashley Kennerly, and I am so excited to be joining the Indian Knoll Firebird family this year! This is my tenth year in elementary education, and I have been blessed with the opportunity to teach many students. As a Woodstock High School graduate, I’m delighted that I’m able to give back to students in Cherokee County.

Upon college graduation from North Greenville University in 2006, after earning a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education, I then moved back to Cherokee County. Originally from Knoxville, Tennessee where all my family lives, my son Max (4 years old) and I love to cheer for the Tennessee Vols, especially during football season!

My teaching career began at Johnston Elementary in 2006, where I taught first grade, as well as EIP in grades K-5. From there, I moved to Canton in 2011 where I taught Kindergarten, fifth grade, and have most recently been teaching Math to students in grades K-5. While at both of these wonderful places, I have had many opportunities and experiences that have prepared me for my transition to an Assistant Principal at Indian Knoll!

As a strong believer in lifelong learning, I have continued my own education while teaching. In doing so, I earned a Master’s in Education from Walden University (2009). Also, from Piedmont College, I earned an Education Specialist degree (2011). Most recently, I have earned a Doctor of Education degree through Liberty University, with an emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction.

I’m excited to join the dynamic staff, phenomenal students, and the wonderful community of Indian Knoll as we help the children maximize their potential and capacity to learn, while we support Individuality, build Knowledge, achieve Excellence, and encourage Service.

assistant principalJennifer Landry - Assistant Principal EMAIL

I’m a proud Indian Knoll Firebird!

My name is Jennifer Landry, and I’m the assistant principal for grades 3-5 and the After-School Program (ASP) Coordinator.  I’m pleased to say that I’m beginning my second year as an administrator at IKES, and I simply love it here!

I am not a native Georgian, but I got here as quickly as I could!  I was born in Mississippi, but I grew up just outside of New Orleans, Louisiana in Slidell.  We moved back to Mississippi when I was in high school.  Already living in Mississippi was the chief reason I attended and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in December of 1994.  If I had still lived in Louisiana, I would have done my best to obtain a degree from Louisiana State University.  Although I didn’t attend LSU, don’t be surprised to see me supporting my tigers by wearing my purple and gold!!

I’ve been an educator for the past 23 years, and I consider myself a learner among learners.  Of those 23 years, I taught for 10 years in grades 5-8, and in three different states – Mississippi, Texas, and Georgia.  Although I taught all subjects, the primary subject I taught was science.  I have also been an administrator in CCSD for the last 13 years.  I have served as an administrator at Carmel ES, Johnston ES, Mountain Road ES, and now, I’m at home at Indian Knoll ES.

I have always enjoyed seeing students excited and inspired when they learn something new.  So, I decided to become a student again myself.  After a long gap since gaining a master’s degree from Texas A & M-Commerce 14 years ago, I began working on a specialist degree in Curriculum and Instruction at Piedmont College this summer.  I will complete the specialist program the summer of 2019 and hope then to begin pursuing a lifelong goal of mine to obtain a doctorate degree.

In my free time, I delight in spending time with my family.  I have two kids of my own and as a bonus, a precious daughter-in-law.  My daughter, Alexandra “Ali”, is a stylist and makeup artist at Studio 5 in downtown Canton.  My son, Jacob “Jake”, works for Orr Fire Protection and Safety Systems all over the southeast, and my daughter-in-law, Macy, is a first-grade teacher at Boston Elementary here in Cherokee County.

We are a family of dog lovers!  I have a 13-year-old mini-Dachshund, Penny, my daughter has a two-year-old American Bulldog/Lab mix, Gunner, and my son and his wife have my other two granddogs, an American Bulldog, Bella, and a Yorkie, Bentley.  I love spending time with my dog and granddogs.

If I’m not with my family or with my dogs, you’ll most likely find me reading a book on my Kindle or in the kitchen cooking up yumminess.

Of all the things I take pleasure in, touching the lives of children, their families, and teachers is where I find the greatest joy.  I’m pleased to be able to serve CCSD as an administrator, but most of all, I’m pleased to serve the community of children, parents, and teachers of Indian Knoll ES.  I’m looking forward to another FANTASTIC year!!
