Two Cherokee County School District First Lego League teams won at Super Regionals, with one advancing to the State Tournament!
The Mill Creek MS Lego Cats - Navy team and the Clark Creek ES STEM Academy BrickMasters team each won the Core Values trophy for their bracket, and the Lego Cats – Navy team also earned a high enough overall score to move on to the state event.
“Congratulations to these excellent young robotics and coding experts,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “First Lego League offers our students the opportunity to demonstrate STEM and critical thinking skills learned in the classroom and further developed and honed through after-school practice. We’re very proud of their success and their teachers’ dedication, and especially proud that they were recognized for demonstrating important values like professionalism, cooperation, teamwork and respect.”
Mill Creek MS Lego Cats – Navy team members are: Phoebe Gonzalez, Felix Jones, Peter Marshall, Kishan Patel and Julius Wilson, and coaches are technology teachers Mark Markley and Ryan Brumbelow. Clark Creek ES STEM Academy BrickMasters team members are: Gracie Adams, Lilah Baker, Hakshara Bisetty, Arnav Ghode, Alisa Hills, Thomas Joyce, Eli Rebolledo, Yeslin Reyes, Micah Stradford and Peter Wadsworth, and coaches are Odyssey Lab teacher Teresa Bailey and Early Intervention Program teacher Joseph Rogers.
The Super Regionals competition was held at Mill Creek MS for 24 Regionals competition top-scoring middle and elementary school teams from public and private schools throughout north Georgia. For the competition, teams designed and built a robot using the LEGO Mindstorms system. During the event, the teams participated in tabletop exercises to demonstrate their robot’s ability to accomplish specific tasks that all teams were responsible for completing. Teams also conduct a research project to solve a problem and make a presentation to the judges on their project.
To earn the Core Values award, teams must demonstrate their understanding of the First Lego League’s dedication to “gracious professionalism and cooperation” through: “Discovery: We explore new skills and ideas; Innovation: We use creativity and persistence to solve problems; Impact: We apply what we learn to improve our world; Inclusion: We respect each other and embrace our differences; Teamwork: We are stronger when we work together; and Fun: We enjoy and celebrate what we do!”
Mill Creek now advances to the State Tournament, at which they again will demonstrate their robotics, coding and problem-solving abilities, to be held Feb. 5 at Georgia Tech.
