CCSD Teacher Named Georgia STEM Scholar!

Posted On: Wednesday, December 1, 2021

CCSD Georgia STEM Scholar - Mill Creek MS 12 1 21

A Cherokee County School District teacher has been named a 2022 Georgia STEM Scholar!

Mill Creek Middle School teacher Ann-Margaret Somers, who teaches eighth-grade science and physical science and serves as the school’s science department chair, earned the honor from the Georgia Youth Science & Technology Centers.  Only about two dozen elementary and middle school teachers from a pool of statewide nominees are recognized each year as STEM Scholars.

Honored educators are selected for their excellence in teaching students about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and their innovation in integrating STEM lessons in elementary and middle school education.  Each honoree receives a $500 award to purchase classroom STEM supplies and free admission to attend the organization’s Summer STEM Institute professional development program in 2022.

“Congratulations to Ann-Margaret for her continued excellence in STEM instruction that has earned her this well-deserved recognition,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said.  “Our School Board and I have made STEM education a priority for all students, with continued investment in programs and resources to support our outstanding teachers.  STEM education prepares students for career opportunities in those fields, and it also provides problem solving and critical thinking skills valuable for every career path.”

This prestigious accolade follows Ms. Somers’ recognition last year as one of only 26 teachers nationwide selected as Teacher Fellows by the Northrop Grumman Foundation and National Science Teaching Association.

Ms. Somers will be recognized by Dr. Hightower and the Cherokee County School Board at an upcoming School Board meeting.
