The Cherokee County School District is celebrating the importance of literacy with its second annual month-long “Get Cherokee Reading” campaign! 

In support of the statewide Get Georgia Reading initiative, the program kicks off with Read Across America Day on Friday, a nationwide reading event that coincides with renowned children’s book author and illustrator Dr. Seuss’s March 2 birthday.

CCSD’s Office of Curriculum & Instruction coordinates the campaign, which builds upon the District’s increased focus on improving literacy through the newly adopted balanced literacy approach to reading and more classroom instructional blocks focused on the skill.
                                                            
“We’ve identified March as a celebration time for recognizing the importance of reading,” said Chief Academic Officer Dr. Nicole H Holmes, whose staff oversees the initiative.  “Each week has suggested activities for students, teachers, and staff to actively demonstrate the enjoyment of reading.”

Some of the activities include Read-Ins with community leader visits to classrooms to serve as guest readers; the creation of school-wide reading logs to capture how many minutes all students spend reading; Flashlight Fridays with time for students to read using flashlights they bring from home; and a “Stop and Read” Day on March 15, with dedicated time at the start of the day in all classes for reading.

Beginning on March 4, all students are encouraged to participate in an optional “Get Caught Reading” 15-day challenge.  The scorecard posted here offers students 15 fun challenges like read to a friend, read a book online, or read with a parent.  Parents are encouraged to post photos of students completing challenges on social media with the hashtag #GetCCSDReading.  Teachers also will be using the hashtag for other special events happening in their classrooms as part of the campaign.
