Free Reading Resources Can Stop the 'Summer Slide'

When children do not read during the summer months, research suggests they may lose up to three months of reading ability. Additional research supports growth in reading skills when a child is presented with opportunities to listen to books or stories.  Interacting with text helps children develop important background knowledge which, in turn, fosters engaged, independent readers.

While CCSD does not mandate nor assess summer reading, we strongly encourage children, along with their families, to participate in reading for enjoyment over the summer. Georgia Department of Education has provided an opportunity for students to read throughout the summer months.  Students can access quality books online with the intent to nurture the love of reading.  “Get Georgia Reading” offers a valuable resource called myOn by Renaissance that provides access to over 6,000 book titles, as well as daily news links, activities and suggestions for parents and children based on reading levels and interests.

This summer opportunity is available to students from May 6th through August 31st.  Follow the steps here to enjoy reading and the activities that are available to students all summer.
