Cherokee County School District students recently participated in the Optimist Club’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing Communication Contest.

This year’s theme was “Staying Optimistic in Challenging Times,” and Johnston ES fifth-grader Amelia Nelson won first place in the oral competition held at Woodstock High School and Teasley MS seventh-grader Aidan Dyke placed first in the signing competition.

Etowah High School junior Jelysce Brown placed second and Woodstock HS senior Luis Becerra placed third.

The Woodstock Midday Optimist Club and Club Chair Maureen Walker organized the competition.  CCSD Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program interpreters Ametria Pelham (Woodstock HS) and Debra Sisk (Teasley MS) assisted, and Pamela Reed-Modica, Amy Heil (Woodstock HS) and Amanda Richards (Woodstock MS) served as judges.
